Events and Training

We provide a wide range of training and events services, from marketing packages through to training in writing and handling the media. We also organise a growing range of events ourselves, or in partnership with other organisations.

Our training services:

How to write for publication : Our tried and tested course on writing the articles that magazines and newspapers want to print. We explain how to write what readers want to read; how to structure an article and how and when to use persuasive language; and how to avoid sending readers to sleep with jargon and waffle. A recent course for the Centre for Cities was described as 'really insightful and very helpful'.

Community newspapers or magazines :
We can provide one-off or regular training for staff or volunteers working on regular publications. Areas covered include: news writing; feature writing; sub-editing and design; media law and libel; investigative journalism.

We delivered a series of training sessions for volunteers on the Burngreave Messenger, a community newspaper in Sheffield. Lisa Swift, coordinator at the Messenger, commented after our pilot course: ‘Everyone said they really enjoyed the session about news and features, and I felt I’d learned a lot. I thought you made the session very relevant to us, and that made a real difference.’

We have developed a new community magazine in north Sheffield, working with a local regeneration agency to support a team of volunteers. We hope to train them to a point where they can take over the running of the publication.

How to get your message across : Our tried and tested course on handling the media. We provide tailored courses to organisations working within regeneration and related fields, for groups of between six and fifteen participants. Areas typically covered include :

We can also deliver workshops for senior staff in writing for publication, explaining how to pitch an idea to an editor, adapt your writing to an audience, and use your role as an expert to raise your organisation's profile.

How to recruit and retain staff : Our recruitment team have many years of experience of helping clients to fill posts, and we have access to some of the most respected specialists in the business. We can arrange tailored events for your organisation or open events in partnership with other organisations

We also work both on our own and with partner organisations to deliver a range of research and marketing services, from telephone research and questionnaire design to public relations.

Do you need a speaker? New Start editor Julian Dobson is a regular speaker at events organised by regeneration organisations and can provide a stimulating starting point for debate and discussion at public events or internal meetings.

Here are just a few of the comments from satisfied event organisers :

‘Just a short note to thank you for your talk at our AGM. It’s a shame there wasn’t time for questions but everyone has said that it was the best AGM for 29 years so thanks for your part.’
Ian Taylor – ICOF

‘Having had a quick sift through the evaluations, it appears that you were quite a hit - being the best part of the day for the vast majority of delegates. We’re all delighted about this, so don’t be surprised if we badger you again in the future!’
