Our Team

Julian Dobson has more than 20 years’ experience in journalism and public policy, ranging from employment relations and health to housing and regeneration. In 1999 he became the founding editor of New Start, the first weekly regeneration magazine for the UK. He is in demand as a conference speaker and chair, and as a trainer. He is editorial director of New Start. His particular skills are project management, editing and writing.

Jamie Veitch is managing director of New Start magazine. He is a key member of the team that stages the highly successful Footsey social enterprise trade fair every year, and has devised, promoted and organised a range of original events on behalf of New Start. He has twice led visits to China for regeneration practitioners.

Susan Downer
Susan has 10 years’ experience in journalism. She has worked for New Start since it began and was promoted to assistant editor in 2001. In 2002 she was shortlisted for the Periodical Publishers Association’s business writer of the year award.

Austin Macauley
Austin is now editor of New Start, having joined New Start’s staff as a senior reporter in January 2003 after working on regional daily newspapers in Nottingham, Blackpool and Stoke-on-Trent. Austin has extensive experience of undertaking original research, including a study of seven cities for the Core Cities Group, and of producing special reports, including a report on creative and digital industries for Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter.

Rosie Niven
Rosie is an experienced journalist who joined New Start in 2004 from Planning magazine. She is joint editor of Voluntary Voice magazine, which we publish on behalf of London Voluntary Service Council.

Tim Mawdsley
Tim has an HND from the London College of Printing and spent five years as group production editor for Emap publishing, responsible for the design, production and branding of a group of magazines and supplements, year books and awards. Tim has worked for New Start Publishing since March 2001, and took charge of the successful redesign of New Start magazine in January 2005.
