2: dissemination and publications

Below are examples of the kind of dissemination and publication services we have provided. The range of options is limitless – please call us to discuss your requirements.

Case study : Academy for Sustainable Communities

The Academy for Sustainable Communities commissioned us to research and write a major series of career profiles and testimonials about careers in sustainable communities. These are now live at the ASC's website.

Shaun Harley, the Academy's communications and marketing manager, said NS+ 'provided a variety of editorial content for ASC that appealed to our different audiences, in particular young people. Their service was always friendly and co-operative – and the work was completed on time and on budget'.

Case study : RENEW Northwest

RENEW Northwest, the centre of regeneration excellence for Northwest England, commissioned NS+ to edit, design and print a series of 'intelligence reports', mainly written by prominent academics.

The first of these, a study on participation and wellbeing by Carolyn Kagan, Professor of Community Social Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, was published in January 2006 and is now available online at the RENEW website.

This was followed by a summary of Renew Northwest's Exemplar Learning Programme, and a paper on the challenges facing creative industries in the northwest.

RENEW chief executive Phil Barton said: ‘We have been working with NS+ as part of our strategy of getting messages across about what works and what doesn’t in regeneration based on evidence and practitioner experience. Their skills in editing, simplifying and designing are considerable and we are really pleased with the intelligence reports they have produced for us.’

Case study : The Housing Corporation

The Housing Corporation, the government agency that finances and regulates social housing, wanted to produce a report celebrating 30 years of social housing grant. It approached us to edit its research into clear, accessible English and to produce a 16-page magazine-style publication that was distributed nationwide through New Start magazine and made available to the Corporation's key partners at the Chartered Institute of Housing's national conference at Harrogate in June 2005.

Matt Leach, director of policy and communications at the Housing Corporation, told us :

‘Just wanted to say that have received my copy of New Start today, complete with "How Cathy Came Home" supplement. It looks and reads fantastically well. Many thanks to you all for doing such a great job.’

Case study : National Probation Service

The National Probation Service wanted to reproduce a cover feature from New Start magazine to promote its community payback scheme. We redesigned the feature in A4 format and included new material to form a 4-page brochure. The National Probation Service ordered 40,000 copies, of which 30,000 were distributed nationwide via the October 2005 issue of The Magistrate magazine. You can download the leaflet here.

When asked whether we could have done anything better, Susan Lord, head of communications at the National Probation Service, described our service as 'perfect' and said that working with us was 'very rewarding'.

Case study : Ernst & Young

Ernst & Young’s regeneration team wanted to flag up issues that were contributing to a ‘fog’ hampering major regeneration projects, and highlight potential solutions. After discussions with key personnel Ernst & Young decided to do this via a four-page supplement in New Start magazine.

Catherine McCormack, industry services director at Ernst & Young, told us :

‘Copies of the magazine have arrived – it looks great. Thank you for working closely with us on this to such tight timescales. We would like to publish an electronic copy of this on our web pages, giving credit to New Start.’

Case study : London Voluntary Services Council

LVSC was looking to improve the content and direction of its bi-monthly magazine, Voluntary Voice. New Start tendered successfully for the work and took responsibility for the magazine from November 2004; we subsequently took on the redesign of Voluntary Voice.

LVSC publications manager Rogan Boon said :

‘The December/January issue arrived on my desk yesterday. It looks very good and the content is so much better than in the past. The whole process seemed much less painful too! Thank you.’
